Hikers — Driving and Services

big bird hitchhike

Don’t rely on hitching … or on shuttles with arbitrary times and limits (no dogs, etc.) …. with me YOU choose times and locations …. plus with me I can swing you to a store in emergency (it’s happened — replacement tents, etc.)
I can drive you to and from trailheads, campgrounds, motels/hotels, bus, home, AMC lots, or wherever you left your car …. even up or down Mount Washington via auto road …. into Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, and even Canada for the Cohos Trail (got my passport ready!)
Best Ways  To Contact Me (in order)
  • facebook messenger Maura Annette Chappelle (you don’t need to Friend me)
  • Text (yes, text) 603-915-1241
** telephone is last resort, service is way too sketchy to count on it plus I can’t answer it when I am at real job but I can text during down times**

Pets are okay, but please let me know in advance.
$5 per animal ($10 if slobbery dog)
Children welcome.  They must use seat belts and babies/toddlers must be in car seats (you bring)
Base Rates are for 1 to 4 people, 5th rider is extra $15

I have a current passport, so if you need to be picked up or dropped off in Canada, that is no problem …. great for those doing the Cohos Trail

Calculating Cost of Rides                                                                          note: most rides begin and end at my base in Jefferson, occasionally I will be away from home so the distance will be greater …. if I quote you from home THEN choose to travel a distance I will not upcharge, the price will not increase

Point A (Jefferson?) to point B (your pick up spot) to point C (your drop off spot) to point D (Jefferson) …. A to D is total miles and time

8 a.m. to 11 p.m. $30 hour plus 30 cents per mile
11 p.m. to 2 a.m. $40 hour plus 30 cents per mile
2 a.m. to 6 a.m.   $50 hour plus 30 cents per mile
6 a.m. to 8 a.m.   $40 hour plus 30 cents per mile

(40¢ minute wait time 8 a.m. to 12 a.m., 80¢ minute wait time 12 a.m. to 8 a.m.)

All prices are subject to change
**some trailheads have surcharges such as Zealand, Twin, Jefferson Notch, Garfield, Cedar Stream, and other rocky unmaintained roads
Time estimates always have extra minutes to allow for fog and going slow to be safe on moose-y roads as well as time for hikers to gather themselves at pick up/drop off (only a few riders are ready to hop in and pop out of my car)
so if google maps says 1 hour 17 minutes I round to 1 1/2 hours
WINTER driving may necessitate slower driving depending on conditions**
**storm conditions increase price

****Note: the “meter” is running when I arrive at arranged time (I need to get paid that 15 minutes to 1/2 hour when someone is running late) …. please communicate as far in advance as possible to avoid the extra cost so I can work with you

…. if one rider is late it often makes me late for the next pick up and I have to discount their fare …. plus communication with me helps me communicate to your fellow hiker

Driving Deposit:

50% of agreed upon estimate must be paid in advance using Paypal, Zelle, Venmo, or, if ride booked far in advance making snail mail an option, Money Order (no personal checks), the remainder is payable in cash at drop off

If the ride is cancelled 36 hours in advance or more a full refund will be issued.  Fewer than 36 hours is at Maura’s discretion for unforeseen, extenuating circumstances only

Paypal, Venmo, and Zelle information will be sent once a ride is arranged

Better than the horrible cereal from my childhood YOU can go halfsies on a ride …. my car seats four passengers, so if you book me and don’t need all four seats feel free to post seeking others to join in and split the cost

save 10% when you show me your Hike Safe Card

(discount is on the portion of the price that is for my time, does not include my gas/maintenance)

refer friends

Have you hired me to drive you to/from a hike?

If your friend then hires me because of your recommendation, you get 10% of your next ride

A few more ways to SAVE MONEY ON RIDES are on facebook.com/groups/trailheadrides but you must scroll around to find them

NOTE Regarding Combined Rides:

If a hiker contacts me for a quote then seeks out other hikers to share the ride/costs (halfsies, see above) the price remains the same except the $5 for 3rd and 4th riders

If a hiker books a ride with me and we agree on a price and later another hiker contacts me and asks for same time, same locations I will ask original rider if they mind sharing …. if they okay it I give them a discount and I say yes to the add on but there is no total split …. the add on will get a discount as well but it is in essence a second car ride financially

(did I word that right? does it make sense?)

Traffic and weather delays are the onus of the client

Delays caused by car problems (not that it’s ever happened) will be my responsibility …. or unforeseen delays (accident ahead of us that causes traffic)

…. however delays caused by rider insisting on my driving near known construction, unkempt properties, back road, predicted inclement weather (high winds/ice/deep snow), and other such hazards ….

…. rider is also financially responsible if their instructions — if they contradict what I express as better judgement — result in damage to my vehicle

If the ride is cancelled 36 hours in advance or more a full refund will be issued.  Fewer than 36 hours is at Maura’s discretion for unforeseen, extenuating circumstances only

I do understand weather watching and that conditions in the White Mountains can turn on a dime so have so far been okay with 24 hour cancels, but the communication that the hiker is monitoring conditions before making a decision should begin by 36 hours

About my rates, it’s not all money in my pocket:

  • I declare all my earnings to the IRS and pay taxes –30% goes to the government
  • I get no sick pay or paid days off …
  • … and pay for own health insurance
  • My car and truck insurance is to the hilt
  • Advertising costs money
  • Gas is expensive
  • My vehicles gets a lot of wear/tear requiring extra cleanings, plus more oil changes and other maintenance/repair (shocks, tie rods, etc. from trails)
